Serious question - why are cookie-cutter ideologues like Parker Molloy and Taylor Lorenz now trying to launch their own Substacks? How exactly will they differentiate themselves from the glut of spicy takes coming out of legacy media?

Because they are on thin ice. The legacy media that hired them and gave them de facto control of the editor's room are figuring out they never should have let the lunatics run the asylum. They need a safe landing spot....which is fine, let the market decide.
And they can always go to trade school.....Electricians and plumbers make six figure incomes where I live, and you can't book one for 3 months.
Provided that they have the humility to do so and the ability to learn a trade -- being shoddy with words and truth is easy, but try to be shoddy with something that may result in fire, flood, deaths and massive charges of criminal negligence... it is not easy. People in trades have to be highly skilled. I do not see any of those people very likely to pick up a trade successfully.
