Jesus. I'm amazed you keep it together with all this deranged bullshit directed your way.

And you hit the nail on the head here: "either online harassment, violent threats, and “stochastic terrorism” are worth devoting huge amounts of energy to, or they aren’t".

The hypocrisy is ridiculous and cannot be sustainable.

This kind of thing makes me sick. As someone who travels in the same circles as Graspin' Fuckwit-Moron (and, not to brag, has probably sold more books), I have to listen to people I otherwise like and respect praise this shit. The fact that GFM can openly call for the deaths of their supposed enemies, whereas I would run the risk of losing my career if I said something like, "Um, I don't think you're being fair to JS or JKR," is pretty fucked.

Worst part is this whole thing is so unnecessary. Why is this the one subject we can't have a sane and sober conversation about (or why are the people who do receiving fucking death threats, or at the least death fantasies?). People like GFM are religious fundamentalists, full stop. Otherwise they wouldn't feel the need to scream about slitting throats when it comes to what should be milquetoast questions like "what's the best treatment plan for a teen who is questioning their gender, especially one who has several other diagnosed psychological conditions?" This sort of trans activism is fullheartedly anti-science, anti-reason, and (seriously) anti-trans, if you believe you want the best outcome for anyone who thinks they might be trans, versus wanting anyone who thinks they might be trans to BE trans. They've already decided what the answer is and can brook no disagreement whatsoever.

Fix your hearts, indeed.

A lot of people are going to vote for Trump because they encountered this sort of bullshit hounding them in their real lives and are going to give it the shiv in the voting booth, or so they think.

You know, as a reformed twitter addict, I do realize that the saying 'twitter is not real life.' is true. But I can't help but wonder if this community is unaware of some of their representation or if a critical mass really is fine with the extremism, lying, and violent threats. I honestly can't think of any other marginalized group that could get away with this or that would let their most obviously mentally ill extremist activists behave this way in public without pushback.

I also find the left's double standard of ignoring the abuse from 'their' side appalling. Not because the right are any better, but because people on the left claim to be better educated and therefore 'know' what's right or wrong better than 'uneducated' or 'ignorant' reactionaries.

Perhaps they ARE 'smarter' than the average Trump supporter. But in my view, that imposes a responsibility on the 'smarter' person to actually ACT in the appropriate way. If a super intelligent left-wing individual knows for a fact just how harmful online abuse is, they can't claim ignorance when someone they disagree with experiences online abuse.

That's not evidence of how enlightened you are. It's evidence of how much of a hypocritical dickhead you are, and how little you value the intelligence you claim to hold.

The idea of strangling people if they all had one throat came from the notorious Roman emperor Caligula, and the serial killer Carl Panzram said something similar to a group of anti-death penalty activists who wanted him spared. Clearly, GFM only takes inspiration from the most noble members of society.

Watched a doco on Carl Panzram once, that guy was a fucking NUT.

I looked her up and she’s a trans woman. Not that I’m saying the notion is true (I’m open to arguments in either direction), but she’s definitely not doing anything to dispel the notion that trans women are more prone than natal women to being violent, testosterone-fueled (since they’re natal males, they typically have higher T levels than natal females despite their medical transition, as far as I understand) lunatics.

At the very least, I think you deserve royalties as the clear inspiration for her novels.

Sorry man. You’ve followed the truth and been fair every step of the way. And it may take years yet to come but the world will know it eventually as well.

For the love of god. She is unhinged and hateful. I am so sorry you have this grotesque crap thrown at you. I am deeply grateful for your writing about trans youth.

I read the first third of her book. Absolute nut job.

Creepy stuff aside, I'd consider it the honor of a lifetime to be cited for my writing in the same breath as JK Rowling.

I'm sorry you've had to put up with this.

I move in some pretty progressive spaces, and my suggestion that you can't be both righteous and cruel is almost invariably met with skepticism or downright derision. As a liberal I hate to say it, but I fear there are some lefties who are just lost and are not likely to come back.

Sorry you have to deal with this, but honest question Jesse: why are you still on twatter at all? I extend this question to the group. Why is anyone here on twatter? What possible benefits is it giving you to justify feeding a platform that is this disgusting, broken, and deranged?

I get what you’re saying. I got off it myself a month or two ago. But Jesse, as a writer, would likely take a significant hit to his career if he quit twitter. Writers in particular kind of need it in our current world, unfortunately. Or so it seems to me, anyway.

To do what, exactly? If it’s just a place to post links to your work, then just do that - I see no need to actually ENGAGE with Twitter in any way.

Unfortunately Jesse doesn’t need to be on Twitter at all to be the target of this nut’s ire.

I just learned that this Gretchen character wrote a book about a virus that turns everyone with testosterone into a bestial lunatic, and in which JK Rowling burns alive in a fire. Seems like a delightful, well-adjust person all around.
