Disclosures
If I enter into any arrangements that could cause perceived conflicts of interest of any sort, I'll put them here
I try to be transparent about my journalism. If there’s anything I think I should disclose, in terms of people or organizations giving me stuff, I’ll put it here. I don’t think this will happen often, but when it does I’ll be straightforward about it. The dates in parentheses refer to when I added a given item to The List.
The List (From Most To Least Recent)
-In November I’ll be appearing on a panel about youth gender medicine and journalism at Genspect’s The Bigger Picture conference. When they reached out I asked for them to cover my travel and lodging, which they agreed to do, but I didn’t ask for a speaking or appearance fee. (8/29/2023)
I subsequently decided to attend the conference as a journalist rather than to participate directly, so I’ll be paying my own way other than having my ticket comped (which is standard practice for a lot of academic and professional conferences that allow journalists in). I’m leaving the struck-through and now-outdated dislosure up for transparency’s sake. (10/14/2023)
-I’m writing this from Tel Aviv. I’m part of a group of journalists the Israeli Consulate in New York brought over here for a tour. I agreed to come on the condition that they would fly me out early or let me stay late so I could also do some programming with an organization or organizations critical of the Israeli government’s policies toward Palestinians. The eventual compromise I struck with myself: I’d come out a bit early and do a three-day tour with B’Tselem (I’m being joined by two of the other journalists coming for the larger tour). After that will come the six-day tour sponsored by the Israeli government. My flights, as well as my lodging during the Consulate portion, are being covered by the Israeli government. Internal travel, meals, and educational and entertainment programming are mostly being covered by both organizations during their respective portions, though we’re paying for our own lodging during the B’Tselem portion. -I’m not sure this requires a disclosure, per se, but as of this past fall I entered into an agreement with Callin, a social-podcasting startup, to produce audio ‘rooms’ (basically podcast episodes with live callers) — I get paid for this (1/10/2022)
-Founders Fund reimbursed me for flights to and from Miami for Hereticon, paid for a hotel room for the duration of the conference, and provided badges to all the events for myself and my girlfriend (they didn’t pay for her travel). This is just for attendance — I’m not participating in any panels or anything. (1/10/2022)
