Before we get to the main event:

-I have a reported piece on an utterly bonkers campus controversy up at Reason. You might like it.

-Yesterday I got baited into (yet again) responding to a critique of my work on youth gender dysphoria that I (yet again) disagreed with pretty heartily. In all honesty, this will only be interesting to those who follow this debate closely and will very likely be a yawnfest to everyone else, which is why I didn’t send it out via email. But it’s there if you’re curious.

My book, The Quick Fix: Why Fad Psychology Can't Cure Our Social Ills, comes out tomorrow — tomorrow! Crazy!

I’m emailing you to ask you to preorder it today if you are able to (here’s an IndieBound link if you’d prefer that). Or to request it at your local library. Or both. If you’re going to do it, now’s the time — these first-week sales figures make a big difference. In the long run, the number of sales required for a book to be seen as successful in the eyes of a publisher is lower than you might think. There are almost 10,000 people on this list (total subscribers, to be clear, not paid), and, believe it or not, even a modest percentage of preorders from you fine folks could really move the needle early on.

Also, you could win stuff! For U.S. residents only, my publisher is giving away a $100 gift card and all you need for entry is proof of purchase or proof of library-request (I specifically asked them to add that). I’m also going to run a little contest of my own with no geographic restrictions. To enter into that drawing, send an email with ‘TQF-preorder’ and nothing else in the subject line to singalminded@gmail.com, and attach (or paste into the body) any kind of preorder receipt or proof of library request. I’m going to pick three entrants at random and give them a year’s free access to the paid edition of Singal-Minded, or add a year to their existing subscription if they already have one. You’re welcome to enter the contest twice if you have proof of both a preorder and a library request — please just send two emails if so, one with each piece of proof. (It’s annoying, I know, but will just make it easier for me to run the contest.)

I’ll accept any and all preorders or library requests marked today, 4/5/2021, or earlier, and sent in to me by the end of the day tomorrow, 4/6/2021. Good luck!

Here’s a running list of interviews and other coverage of The Quick Fix so far if you want to read or hear more. I also have an interview going up on Very Bad Wizards tomorrow (great podcast if you haven’t heard it before), plus a bunch of stuff after that, so stay tuned…

Coming Tuesday @jessesingal joins @peez and @tamler to talk about his new book The Quick Fix, positive psychology (scam?), cancel culture (overblown?), substack incentives, and more. Plus David and Tamler argue about ghosts

Thank you guys so much for your support. If you can’t buy The Quick Fix or request it at your library, I totally understand. And apologies if I’ve seemed to go on and on and on about my book. There are so many elements of this business I can’t control, but I figure I can control using my platform to the best of my ability to try to boost sales, and that’s what I’m doing.

Have a great week!

One of my few other (in addition to BARPod, of course) "must listen" podcasts is Very Bad Wizards. I guess it makes sense but seeing my worlds collide like this ... I think I'll wear cargo shorts in commemoration of this event.
